Life Skills

One of my favorite days in Honduras involved Jean (Mother Teresa), Linda and I conducting a Life Skills class for the 23 Hope mothers who are supported year round by contributors here at home. From the supporters they receive a food distribution once a month, school uniforms for their children (you have to have a uniform to attend school), and one improvement to their home per year.
For the Life Skills, we set up shop under an open pavilion in the Mission Compound. We had our young, strong male translators carry chairs to the area. One by one the ladies arrived.
It was a beautiful, sunny, cloudless day with the sky a bright blue. The pavilion provided needed shade while we conducted the class.
Jean brought with us a life-sized cut out of a Honduran woman that was made by an elementary class in the US. Jean named her Josephina. Jean used Josephina to illustrate to the women all the different "hats" they must wear to accomplish their job as mother. Josephina was taped up front and on her Jean taped these job descriptions: disciplinarian, nutritionist, teacher, friend, nurturer, cook, laundress, etc.
This was our launching point to begin our teaching on being a godly woman in their home and community. We used Scripture to support our points about good nutrition, raising children with manners, the importance of a devotional life, helping others in the community, etc. Amanda, a senior from Seneca Valley, gave a short presentation on the treatment and prevention of lice as well.
Each woman got a daily devotional and a Bible story book for their family. We had some jewelry pieces donated so at the end, each came one by one to pick a special piece of jewelry. I ceremoniously put the jewelry on them as if they had won a gold medal in the Olympics.
The women were attentitive and appreciative. It was a wonderful time of ministry to fellow women in Christ.

Patty, love your blogs. Love the way you are able to communicate the joy you see in your encounters and your contributions to that joy.
