Being a Mom to Adult Children

Lauren had a post about what it means to be a mom recently. It inspired me to share my thoughts about what it means to be a mom to adult children.
Here's my list:
~having enjoyable, interesting conversations with these amazing people
~knowing when to comfort and when to say "knock it off"
~worrying
~interceding for them as they make life choices
~kissing their bruised egos instead of their bruised knees
~hanging out and laughing
~planning vacations together
~making time for each other
~trying hard to win every competition but usually losing
~trying to keep your mouth shut
~apologizing when you can't
~being their biggest cheerleader
~being the Voice of reason when you need to be
~loving unconditionally
~forgiving and asking for forgiveness
~being friends with their friends
~always keeping the home fires burning for their return, no matter how short

Do I miss having my three little chicks under my roof? Sometimes. (Having Jer here helps with that somewhat) I can tell you that the empty nest periods we have experienced have been fun, too. As much as I loved raising my children and having my family all nesting together, I can tell you that there are joys at every stage. What a journey! What a privilege.
