Friday, Saturday and Sunday Jon and I got to spend some quality time in New York City. We went to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary (yeah us!) Jon's company leases some apartments in the East Village, a place known as Stuyvesantown. We were able to park our car in a protected garage and stay in one of the apartments. Much larger than a NYC hotel room, it was a few blocks from the subway and the area had a lot of local flavor. On Friday we bought beautiful fresh fruit on the street and that was our breakfast every morning.
One reason we (Jon) really wanted to go to NYC was to attend a Yankee's game before they implode Yankee stadium. We rode the subway out to the Bronx .....it comes up out of the ground right at the stadium. The new stadium is already built and is so close to the old one it was unbelievable. What a sight coming out of the subway! Very exciting! The Yankees were playing the Oakland As; it was very hot. We had bleacher seats and the refreshment stand was under the bleachers. Once when I ventured down there, I had to navigate through bodies that had collapsed in the heat (seriously).
Whenever A Rod or Derek Jeter would get up to bat, you would think it was a lightening storm, there were so many flash bulbs going off all over the stands. Both of them are treated like Hollywood celebrities!
It was a kick to experience baseball at the House that Ruth Built.
Saturday we went on two different bus tours. One of them took us up the west side of Central Park, and showed us the doorway where John Lennon was gunned down. We also toured Harlem, and saw the Apollo Theatre, Bill Clinton's office, and where Malcom X converted Casius Clay to Islam. Coming down the east side of Central Park, also known as Museum Row, we saw where Andrew Carnegie had a home (now a museum) and where Clayton Frick had a home (now a museum). A lot of Pittsburgh ties in the Big Apple!
Twice we tried to get out of the heat by catching a movie in Times Square. We wanted to see Batman, but every show before 11pm was sold out both Saturday and Sunday.
On Sunday we went to the Harbor to take a harbor cruise out past the Statue of Liberty. Alas, the boat for the 1:00 tour got filled and could not accomodate us. While waiting in the "stand by" line, my pocket got picked! UUUURRRRGGGGHHH. This is so maddening!! My license and MAC card were in there, but only $20 in cash. It was a major bummer.
Undaunted by the seedy side of NYC trying to discourage us, we then took a cab ride up to Tavern on the Green where we had Sunday brunch. Although expensive, the experience of dining in this famous place was worth it! The food was good, too .
Meandering back down toward Times Square, we discovered city block after city block of Broadway had been closed down for a street fair. It was hot, but there was fresh-squeezed lemonade for a dollar.
We are not "city people" but a trip to "the city that never sleeps" is a fun adventure every once in a while. One and a half thumbs up!

It sounds like a wonderful weekend! I can't wait til Dan and I can get away without the kids... Congrats on 30 years!
I love NYC! I've been there a few times and have never been disappointed.
It's a bummer about your pick-pocketing experience. I had an elderly neighbor who grew up in the Bronx, and she made me a little bag that I could carry my license and some cash in. It fit right in the inside of your bra! And you never knew it was there. It made for some interesting times when I needed to get money out, but I also never got pick-pocketed! :)
