A Night at the Oscars

Bethany and I just got a chance to have a mother-daughter getaway for a few days. Sunday night we had a little Oscar party and watched the festivities from start to finish. That led to a lot of discussion on our all-time favorite movies. Here are my top 10:

1. Love and Basketball
2. When Harry Met Sally
3. You've Got Mail
4. Sleepless in Seattle
5. While You Were Sleeping
6. Never Been Kissed
7. Arthur
8. A Few Good Men
9. Juno
10. Apollo 13

Romance, comedy, a military courtroom drama, and.....Apollo 13?? OK, OK, Apollo 13 just doesn't seem to fit on that list. Yet, it may be my all-time favorite. I certainly can never NOT watch if I see it's on TV. I think I could watch this movie once a week. Let me tell you why. First, I'm from Apollo, PA. (quick: what's Apollo, PA spelled backwards? Apollo, PA). My town was just "over the moon" with all of the Apollo space missions. We renamed one of our streets "Astronaut Way". We had a carnival every year to celebrate the moon landing. (I'm serious). People sent letters to our town to be postmarked with Apollo, PA when Neil Armstrong walked on the moon. Second, my uncle worked at Kennedy Space Center in Florida until his retirement a decade ago. Therefore, I toured the place a number of times. NEVER MIND THAT I HATE TO FLY, THIS STUFF STILL FASCINATES ME.
A key line in this movie is FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION. The amount of creativity, ingenuity, skill and teamwork it took to get that crew safely back to earth is astounding.
Now, blogging friends, what are YOUR favorite movies? Make your lists, and pass the popcorn.
