Today I got to work (6am) and found out that the server for our main application was down. Without our scheduling tool, IEX, my department is crippled. Ninety percent of our job revolves around this software. From 6am-10am, we basically twiddled our thumbs. I had a few spreadsheets for July that I could create in Excel. I could clean out my email (700 saved emails seems a bit excessive, huh?) Can you say bored to tears?? At 10:15am, the Boss sent out an email saying people could go home, "flex time". She made it clear it would be a limited number of people. The catch is, you either had to use vac time or make up the time you missed. I jumped on that email and hit reply as fast as I could. I was sure everyone else would be hitting the reply button as well, and she might be going by "first come, first served". Turns out I was the only one that wanted to take advantage of the gorgeous weather!
I had planned to go to Pier 1 in Cranberry after work today....so what a great opportunity for me to stop over there and do what I needed to do. I told my boss I would be in the area for 45 min or so; if the system happened to be repaired in that time, give me a call, I can come back.
Well guess what??? I was only gone 17 minutes and the system was up and running. They phoned me back in on this beautiful summer day. It almost wasn't fair to get a taste of an unexpected, free summer day. Going back to work was a bummer!

This is why you need caller ID. Never answer when the boss calls! ;)
Awwww Patty! You should have pretended like you never heard your phone ring. When you get a taste of freedom, just run away!
